Diphtheria is present in northern Thailand provinces

Officials from the Ministry of Health reported a total of 87 cases of diphtheria in 15 northeastern provinces this year. Two of them died. More than half of the patients were detected in Loei Province next to Laos. Diphtheria was thought to have been eliminated from Thailand prior to this year. Vaccination campaigns are being reinforced in the affected areas. Travellers are reminded that outbreaks of the highly contagious diphtheria can occur anywhere in the world at any time. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to the highly contagious diphtheria by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including diphtheria (DPT), are up-to-date prior to travelling.
