Dramatic increases in dengue fever cases in tourist resort Madeira (update)

Since the initial 2 cases of dengue fever were reported in Madeira on October 3rd, the total number of cases has jumped to 1,672. While there have been no deaths reported, at least 100 people have been hospitalised. A total of 10 tourists from mainland Europe (Portugal, Germany, U.K., France, Sweden and Finland) have returned home after being infected during their vacations. Travellers to Madeira can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
