Dramatic rise in cases of chikungunya fever in South Cotabato, Philippines

Since the first 2 cases of chikungunya fever were reported a week ago in Tampakan, there have been 215 new cases of this infection reported in one week. most of the cases have occurred in the villages of Maltana, Kipalbig and Poblacion. Travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever may not seek medical care and may not be reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
