Drinking date sap contaminated with Nipah virus can be fatal in Bangladesh

Two people, a father and a son, died with Nipah virus infections after consuming raw date sap from Bhaluka. Since first noted in an outbreak in 2001, the virus has killed 136 of its 176 victims in 21 districts across Bangladesh. The bat-borne Nipah virus contaminates raw date sap, and when consumed, causes the infection. Travellers should avoid consumption of raw date sap in Bangladesh.
