Drug overdose epidemic in British Columbia, Canada

In the past few months, there has been a significant increase of overdoses and deaths among chronic and recreational drug users due to the appearance of carfentanil, a synthetic drug normally used as a tranquilizer on large animals like elephants. This drug is highly potent in small quantities and is often mixed with other drugs. This drug is 100 times more toxic than fentanyl which also causes serious overdoses.

Advice For Travellers

There is no reliable way for people to know if illicit drugs are laced with carfentanil, and the Health Ministry is urging chronic and recreational users to follow harm-reduction measures, such as having someone sober present and carrying the opioid antidote naloxone.
