E.coli epidemic in northern Germany continues

Although the daily number of reported cases of the rare strain of E.coli bacteria that is causing the European epidemic is decreasing, 300 new cases were registered, bringing the total to date to 2,648. Nearly 700 of those affected are hospitalised with a serious complication called haemolytic uremic syndrome that results in kidney failure. Another 100 cases have been reported from other European countries and the United States, although no local spread has occurred from these cases.

Since the exact cause of the epidemic has not been discovered yet, travellers are advised to avoid consuming salads and sprouts in northern Germany.
