Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo - update

Since May 11th, no new confirmed or probable cases of Ebola have been reported. However, 6 new suspected cases were reported from Muma, Nambwa and Ngayi Health Areas in the Likati Health Zone. So far, there have been 22 possible cases in this outbreak, but not all have been confirmed by laboratory tests. The outbreak may be coming under control.

Advice

The affected area is remote and hard to reach, with limited communication and transport infrastructure. Unless the traveller is a healthcare worker or other person responding to the outbreak, the risk of exposure for the general traveller is very low. There is no treatment for Ebola. Any traveller in the affected area should avoid any direct contact with anyone suspected to have this infection since it is highly contagious and lethal. Transmission often occurs during burial rituals (such as washing the body) for deceased patients, close physical contact with infected persons and their body fluids, during sexual contact or within hospitals through contact with blood and body fluids of infected persons.
