An outbreak of gastroenteritis (food poisoning) involving 193 confirmed cases and 3 deaths has been traced to E.coli contamination of produce in the Santo Domingo Xenacoj market in Guatemala City. Travellers who purchase fresh produce from local markets should follow safe food recommendations for cleaning produce. Consuming raw vegetables should be avoided whenever possible.
