Economic collapse nears in Zimbabwe

Police in Zimbabwe used tear gas and warning shots while demonstrators began a nationwide strike against the government's economic policies. The government has failed to pay civil servants' salaries, and there is a currency shortage. Restrictions on imported goods, coupled with police road blocks that were allegedly extorting cash from commercial drivers, have added to civil unrest. In some suburbs of Harare, protesters burned tires and blocked streets. Businesses closed and transportation was seriously affected.
