Economic protests in Algeria turn violent

Following the implementation of strict austerity economic and social measures to cope with the drop in oil prices, there were riots, burnings and vandalism in many cities such as Bejaia, Tichy, Sidi Aich and Tazmalt. Police used tear gas in some areas to disperse protesters. Calm has returned, and public transport services have tentatively resumed, but many business in Bejaia were closed.
