Eleven deaths due to Hepatitis E outbreak in Himachal Pradesh

Eleven people have died due to hepatitis E infections in the Shimla. Due to contamination of the main water supply for the area, over half of the families in the town have also been affected by the disease in the past 2.5 months.

Advice For Travellers

Hepatitis E virus generally causes an infection with no or mild symptoms. It usually resolves in 4-6 weeks with no special treatment. This virus is transmitted mostly in crowded settings that have contaminated water supplies and poor sanitation and hygiene conditions. Pregnant women suffer disproportionately high mortality from hepatitis E. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure by following strict water and food safety precautions.
