Encephalitis - more deaths in children reported in Bihar, India, (update)

Since the beginning in May of the epidemic of encephalitis in Bihar, 100 children have died and 57 others are still hospitalized due to encephalitis (brain inflammation). The exact cause has yet to be identified, but Japanese encephalitis has occurred previously in this area. Altogether, there have been 260 reported cases.

Travellers to this area should exercise caution since the infectious germs causing this outbreak have not been identified. Travellers may wish to consider obtaining vaccination against Japanese encephalitis prior to travelling to this area.
