Encephalitis, Viral - outbreak in Luoding, Guangdong Province, China, results in 169 cases

Health authorities in Luoding have reported an outbreak of viral encephalitis, reportedly due to the enterovirus echovirus type 9. A total of 169 cases have been treated. No deaths were reported.

Echoviruses can be transmitted from person-to-person, by respiration of oral secretions, and through contaminated water and food. Travellers to this area can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by practicing careful personal hygiene and avoiding consumption of contaminated food and water.
