Enhanced security measures for flights to the U.S. and Britain originating at certain overseas airports

The United States and the U.K. have announced security measures that will take effect no later than March 25, 2017. Based on their current threat assessment, enhanced security measures will affect flights departing from 10 selected airports to the United States from the following countries: Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. The affected overseas airports are: Queen Alia International Airport (AMM), Cairo International Airport (CAI), Ataturk International Airport (IST), King Abdul-Aziz International Airport (JED), King Khalid International Airport (RUH), Kuwait International Airport (KWI), Mohammed V Airport (CMN), Hamad International Airport (DOH), Dubai International Airport (DXB), and Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH).

The enhanced security measures will require that all personal electronic devices larger than a cell phone or smart phone be placed in checked baggage if departing for the United States from the above 10 airports. Approved medical devices may be brought into the cabin after additional screening.

The airlines involved are Royal Jordanian, Egypt Air, Turkish Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad Airways. No US carriers will be required to follow the new rules.

Advice

Passengers on flights to the U.S. or the U.K. from these airports should pack large personal electronic devices in checked baggage. Contact your air carrier if you need more information on how these measures may affect your flight.
