Epidemic of dengue fever in Taiwan continues to grow

With approximately 500 new cases of dengue fever reported during the past few days, the total number of reported cases across Taiwan has almost exceeded 7,000 cases. There have been at least 10 suspected deaths. The cities of Tainan and Kaohsiung have reported the majority of the cases, but other affected cities include Taoyuan, Taipei, Hsinchu, Chiayi, and Keelung. Affected counties include Pingtung, Taipei, Taichung, Hsinchu, Chiayi, Changhua, Penghu, Hualien, Ilan, Nantou, Yunlin, Miaoli and Kinmen.

Advice For Travellers

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
