Epidemic of EV71 virus continues in Taiwan

Health authorities have warned that the current epidemic of EV 71 virus shows no signs of slowing. So far in 2012 to date, 70 cases were reported, including 24 with severe complications. This virus can cause illness ranging from moderate gastrointestinal symptoms to hand foot, and mouth disease to severe encephalitis (brain inflammation).

Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to this virus by exercising careful personal hygiene with frequent hand washing and avoidance of close contact with infected persons. Small children are most susceptible to infection with this virus.
