Explosion at World Cup viewing venue in Damaturu, Nigeria

An explosion occurred outside a public World Cup viewing venue in the town of Damaturu in northeast Nigeria. Reports of fatalities or casualties are not yet available.

The states of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe have been under a state of emergency since May 2013 due to Boko Haram insurgency. East African countries are on high alert warning citizens of possible attacks on World Cup public viewing sites. Islamist militant groups, including Boko Haram, have described football as un-Islamic.
