Extensive spread of dengue fever outbreak in Bolivia

So far in 2011, health authorities have reported over 26,000 cases of dengue fever with 45 deaths. The rainy season increased the mosquito population resulting in extensive spread of the virus. The tropical departments of the Beni, La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz are most affected. Approximately 60 percent of the fatalities have occurred in children and adolescents.

Travellers to these areas should be aware of the risk of exposure to dengue fever virus and take all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
