Extreme weather is causing havoc in northern Japan. Heavy snow and strong winds are occurring across Hokkaido and northern Honshu. The city of Aomori reports 83 centimeters (32 inches) of snowfall. More snowfall is forecast for Hokkaido with a possible 20 centimeters in Sapporo this week.

Advice

Rail travel has been disrupted, and airline flights have been cancelled. Parts of the Chuo Expressway in the Yamanashi and Nagano prefectures and other roads have been blocked. Authorities have warned those in the area to remain indoors.
