Ferry accident in Indonesia leaves 23 dead

A boat carrying passengers from Jakarta’s port of Muara Angke to Tidung, a resort island, caught fire. Of more than 230 people on board, 23 are dead and 17 are missing.

Advice For Travellers

Ferry accidents are common in Indonesia due to overcrowding and lax safety regulations. If travelling by boat, note the location of safety equipment and also note the exits. If possible, travel in larger boats which perform better in rough open seas. Avoid overcrowded boats with more passengers than seats.
