Filariasis is increasing in Zambia

Filariasis (elephantiasis) cases are reported to be increasing in various parts of Zambia where between one and 53 percent of the population may be infected with this parasite.

Visit our Health Library for more information on exposure to and the prevention of Elephantiasis.

Advice For Travellers

There are no vaccines or drugs to prevent filariasis. The best way to avoid this disease is to avoid mosquito bites. The mosquitoes that carry the worms usually bite between dusk and dawn.
