First appearance of West Nile Fever virus in Brazil

The first appearance of West Nile virus in Brazil is being investigated after a person in the state of Piauí became ill with symptoms suggesting the disease. In addition, blood samples from 41 persons in the municipality of Aroeiras do Itaim have been sent to a laboratory for testing after they developed symptoms of West Nile fever.

Since there is no vaccine or treatment for West Nile fever, travellers to areas where this virus has been found can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
