First case of polio in 14 years reported in Baghdad, Iraq

The first suspected case of polio in 14 years has been reported in Baghdad. Successful vaccination campaigns had eliminated the disease until now. Although the lack of personal security and the presence of broad civil unrest are sufficient reasons to avoid travelling to Iraq, any travellers who must visit this country can reduce their risk of exposure to polio virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including polio, are up-to-date prior to travelling.

Visit our Health Library for more information on exposure to and the prevention of Polio.
