First time in 34 years, Chikungunya virus detected in Sierra Leone

For the first time in 34 years, chikungunya virus has been detected in Sierra Leone. Twenty five cases were reported in the city of Bo.

Travellers to this area can reduce their risk of exposure to chikungunya fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever may not seek medical care and may not be reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
