Floods causing catastrophic situation in Balkans

In Serbia and Bosnia, flood waters have caused an estimated 3,000 landslides. Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate, entire towns and villages have been devastated, and land mines and the warning signs in land mine areas have been disturbed or shifted. Thousands have evacuated their homes in Croatia.

Although rains have eased and flood waters in some areas receded, the River Sava is expected to continue rising for the next two days and high waters could continue for several more days.

In areas without potable drinking water and electriticy, there are concerns about public health and disease outbreaks of infectious diseases, such as enterocolitis, typhus and hepatitis. Due to landslides and sinkholes, dozens of roads have been closed.
