Floods death toll rises in Central America

Heavy rains from a large tropical storm have caused 45 deaths, floods and mudslides in 3 countries. Thousands have abandoned their homes. Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom has declared a “state of calamity” along the storm-hit Pacific coast, where many people have been trapped without food and fresh water for days. A state of emergency was also declared in El Salvador.

Travellers should be aware that essential services and transportation may be interrupted in many areas along the Pacific coast.
