Flu (influenza) season is underway in southern hemisphere

With the beginning of the fall-winter season in the southern hemisphere, several countries are reporting increasing numbers of reported flu cases. For example, in Peru, there have been 546 reported cases with 31 deaths, the majority of whom occurred in the Lima area. There are certainly many more flu cases who do not seek medical care and are not reported.

Influenza viruses are transmitted from person to person by inhaling small airborne respiratory droplets created when infectious persons cough, sneeze or laugh. These viruses are also spread by hand-to-hand and hand-to-mouth contact. Maintaining a small distance (1 meter) from a person with a respiratory illness and frequent hand washing will help reduce the risk of exposure.
