Flu vaccine may be less effective this year; virus mutates

So far this season, 5 children have died from the flu in the USA. Outbreaks have occurred in schools and nursing homes.

As the winter flu season begins in the northern hemisphere, it has been found that one of the dominant strains of the influenza virus has changed slightly so that the formulation for the flu vaccine may not be quite as effective this year. Nevertheless, the currently available vaccine still provides the best protection against the currently circulating influenza viruses. Maintaining a small distance (1 meter) from a person with a respiratory illness and frequent hand washing will also help reduce the risk of infection.
