Food borne intoxication by E.coli in Germany

Investigations by health authorities into the cause of the food borne intoxication outbreak (food poisoning) by a potentially fatal strain of E.coli bacteria suggest that there is a high probability that tomatoes, cucumbers and leafy green vegetables carried the bacteria. Health authorities have warned people to wash vegetables, as well as cutting boards, thoroughly. While the total number of cases detected has reached 140, an additional 350 cases are under investigation, and there have been 3 deaths.

Travellers to northern Germany should be aware of the risk of exposure to this bacteria and should take all necessary precautions to avoid consuming unwashed vegetables, especially if preparing their own food.
