Food Borne Intoxication (E.coli) - consumption of raw beef causes serious illness in Belgium

Consumption of raw beef in Limbourg has resulted in 19 cases of serious food poisoning due to E.coli. Of these 19 cases, 3 have symptoms of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a complication that leads to kidney failure. An investigation into how the meat became contaminated is underway.

Travellers who may have consumed raw beef in this area and who develop gastro-intestinal symptoms (e.g. diarrhoae) should seek medical care as soon as possible.
