Health authorities have confirmed an outbreak due to food borne intoxication (food poisoning) in Japan. A total of 20 cases became ill in Toyama prefecture after eating at a Gyukaku restaurant chain on May 6. The cases were infected with a particular strain of the bacteria E.coli which cause serious complications. This in not the same strain causing the epidemic in Europe. Meat imported from Australia has been implicated as the cause, but contamination may have occurred after processing or cooking in Japan.

Travellers should be aware of the risk of exposure to this bacteria especially when consuming raw meat or unsafe foods.
