Food Poisoning - Hokkaido, Japan

Multiple reports had identified a large outbreak of gastrointestinal disease due to food poisoning in a several schools on the island of Hokkaido, Japan. At least 1,048 schoolchildren and teachers became ill. The students and teachers were located at nine elementary and junior high schools in the city of Iwamizawa. A toatl of 13 students were hospitalized. Salmonella bacteria are suspected as the contaminants of lunches that were prepared for 3,100 students in a central kitchen.

While travellers to this area are not at risk of becoming exposed to the infectious agents involved in this outbreak, it is important to be aware of food safety issues while travelling.
