Food Poisoning - Hokkaido, Japan (update)

Nine elementary and junior high schools have been closed due to the outbreak of gastrointestinal illness. A total of 1,048 people have developed symptoms, including 998 pupils and 50 teachers and workers. Thirteen children were hospitalized.

Salmonella bacteria have been detected in samples taken from five stricken children.

While travellers to this region are not at risk for exposure to this outbreak, travellers should be aware of the risk associated with consuming improperly stored or prepared food.
