Food poisoning outbreak in France

Health authorities have reported an outbreak of E.coli bacteria food poisoning that has resulted in the hospitalization of 6 children, one of whom is seriously ill in a coma. The source of the bacterial contamination has been traced to the consumption of frozen beef burgers produced by the German discount chain Lidl. All the frozen beef burgers have been removed from stores.

Travellers should be aware that this outbreak is NOT caused by the same strain of E.coli that contaminated vegetable sprouts in northern Germany and sickened over 3,000 people. Nevertheless, travellers should be alerted when local authorities issue food recall notices and, if preparing their own meals, check to see if they have purchased any of the contaminated products.
