Fresh protests planned in Cairo, Egypt

Faculty at Cairo universities plan fresh protests against the government restrictions on political protests at universities. Leading up to the new academic year, authorities hired private security firms, installed metal detectors and cameras around campuses and erected fortified walls around universities. Also, security personnel are permanently stationed outside campuses.

Students demonstrated this weekend against “repressive university policies”, and at least 65 students were arrested. At al-Azhar and Cairo universities, police reportedly stormed the campuses in armoured vehicles and fired tear gas to disperse student protesters.
