Frozen strawberries from Egypt cause hepatitis A outbreak in 7 states, USA

At least 70 cases of hepatitis A in seven states have been linked to contaminated frozen strawberries from Egypt used by the Tropical Smoothie Cafe restaurants to make “smoothie” beverages. Most of the cases have occurred in Virginia, but sporadic cases have also been reported in in Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina, Wisconsin, New York and Oregon. A total of 32 people have been hospitalized.

Advice For Travellers

Due to the long incubation period of hepatitis A, more cases may appear during the coming weeks. The company has removed all foreign strawberries from their products. However, any traveller who develops the symptoms of hepatitis A and who patronized this company should seek medical advice.
