Fuel Station Strike and Security Concerns in Lebanon

Petrol stations in Lebanon will begin a nationwide, open-ended strike on Thursday (28 Nov). They are protesting the requirement that they collect payments from customers in Lebanese pounds but must pay fuel importers in US dollars.

Over the past three nights, demonstrations turned violent with clashes between protesters and sectarian supporters of the Shia parties, Hezbollah and Amal. Amnesty International has warned that the government has failed to protect the peaceful protesters and that this could signal a ‘dangerous escalation’.

Advice

There are growing security concerns due to the financial crisis. The protests are ongoing and the security situation in areas of the country could deteriorate quickly. If travelling in Lebanon, take precautions for personal safety and security.
