Global polio situation (summary)

There were only 223 polio cases reported from around the world in 2012, the lowest ever recorded. Even in the 3 remaining countries (Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria) where transmission of the virus still occurs, there were only isolated cases in a few remote areas.

This year, new outbreaks have worried authorities:
Somalia -25 children have been paralyzed by polio. Previously, Somalia did not have any cases of polio for more than 5 years.
Kenya - another 6 children were paralyzed in a Kenyan refugee camp since early May.

Travellers in any country that reports cases of polio can reduce their risk of exposure to polio virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including polio, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
