Grenada is most recent Caribbean island to confirm the presence of the chikungunya virus

With 5 confirmed cases of the chikungunya virus from the sister island of Carriacou, Grenada is the most recent country to report the spread of chikungunya virus. The epidemic of this virus will continue to spread widely in the Americas since its introduction into the Caribbean region earlier this year.

Chikungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences. Travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
