Half a million Patels protest and strike in Ahmedabad, India

Gujarat's main city, Ahmedabad, the capital of Gujarat state in India is virtually paralyzed due to a strike and protest by about half a million people of the Patel caste that began yesterday. The military has been deployed to Ahmedabad and also Surat. The strike continues today. Schools and businesses are closed, there is no public transportation operating, and internet services for mobile phones are shut down.

Travellers should be aware of the political tension in the state of Gujarat. Protests have been occurring since July in Surat, Vadodara, Mehsana and in Ahmedabad. A curfew in is place for parts of Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, Ramol, Nikol, Bapunagar, Ghatlodia, Naranpura, Odhav, Naroda, Krishnagar and Vadaj.
