Hand, foot and mouth disease cases increasing in North Island in New Zealand

There are reports of an increasing number of cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) throughout the North Island in New Zealand. Since the disease is not required to be reported, the exact number is not known. Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty region is one areas reporting an outbreak in school age children. Travellers who are travelling with small children who are most susceptible to infection with this virus can decrease the risk of exposure to hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) virus by frequent hand washing and maintaining careful personal hygiene.
