Hand, foot and mouth disease in China and Japan

Both China and Japan are experiencing a surge in reported cases of hand, foot and mouth disease. In China, the number of cases nationwide is approaching 100,000 with 10 deaths. In Japan, there have been 13,841 cases with a major increase reported in March.

Small children less than ten years old are most susceptible to infection with this virus. Travellers who are travelling with small children can decrease the risk of exposure to hand, foot and mouth disease virus by washing their hands frequently and by maintaining careful personal hygiene.
