Health emergency due to dengue fever and chikungunya declared in 8 Peruvian provinces

Due to the number of cases of dengue fever and the threat of chikungunya, 8 provinces in Peru (Piura, Sullana, Talara, Paita, Sechura, Morropón, Huancabamba and Ayabaca) have declared a health emergency.

Both viruses that cause dengue and chikungunya fever are transmitted by mosquitoes. Travellers to areas where these viruses are active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever or chikungunya do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
