Heavy rains cause severe flooding in northern Japan

Torrential rains have created sudden flooding that has taken the life of at least one persons and forced the evacuation of nearly 400,000 people. Swollen rivers overflowed to create water levels that reached as high as 12 metres. Although the worst of the rains appears to be over, there are threats of mudslides.

Travellers to these areas should be aware that basic services are disrupted temporarily and should consider deferring travel for the next few days.
