Heavy rains have caused severe flooding with reported deaths in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais

Heavy rains have increased the risk of mudslides similar to those that displaced 35,000 people and killed about 900 last year. A small dam ruptured in the norther part of the state of Rio de Janeiro, killing 8 people.

In the neighboring state of Minas Gerais, 87 have declared a state of emergency.

Travellers to these areas should be aware that essential services, including transportation, may be disrupted.
