Heavy rains in Hawaii cause massive sewage spill contaminating Waikiki Beach

A tropical depression brought heavy rains to Hawaii that overwhelmed the sewage system on Oahu. There is a sewage spill of about 500,000 gallons contaminating Waikiki Beach and nearby areas.

Advice For Travellers

Authorities have posted alerts about contamination in an area from Kapahulu Avenue to Point Panic, a popular body surfing spot in the Kakaako area. Ala Moana Regional Park is closed. Authorities have asked people to stay out of the water at Waikiki Beach.

In addition to the beaches, the public is advised to remain out of the waters in the areas from Kewalo Basin and the Ala Wai Boat Harbour, the canal along Ala Moana Boulevard, and the pond near the Ala Moana Boulevard entrance.

The public is also advised to avoid contact with any standing water in the park near those areas, and along the intersection of Ala Moana Boulevard and Atkinson Boulevard.
