Hepatitis A Outbreak Continues to Expand in Michigan, USA - update

More cases of hepatitis A continue to be reported with spread to the north and west of the main southeastern Michigan focus of the outbreak that began over 12 months ago. The total cases continue to increase (736 infected people of whom 24 have died).

Advice

Travellers should be aware that hepatitis A is preventable through vaccination. When there is a risk of exposure to hepatitis A virus, travellers can basically eliminate this risk by obtaining the vaccine prior to travelling and by exercising caution and avoiding consuming contaminated food and water and close personal contact (including sexual activities) with infected persons.
