Hepatitis A outbreak in Pretoria,Tshwane District and Gauteng Province of South Africa

Health officials are advising local residents in Pretoria, Tshwane District and Gauteng Province to pay particular attention to personal hygiene in the face of an outbreak of hepatitis A. A total of 17 cases have been confirmed. Since hepatitis A infection in children may not cause any symptoms, there may be many more cases in the community. No deaths have been reported.

Travellers in these areas should be aware of the risk of exposure to hepatitis A virus and take all necessary precautions to avoid contaminated food and water. Personal hygiene is important to help prevent infection.
