Hepatitis A outbreak in Russian Republic of Dagestan

A water main that supplied drinking water contaminated with hepatitis A virus is thought to be the source of an outbreak of this infection involving 69 people, 58 of whom were children. The patients resided in the towns of Derbent, Dagestanskiye Ogni and Gedzhukh.

Hepatitis A can be prevented through vaccination. When there is a risk of exposure to hepatitis A virus, travellers can reduce this risk by obtaining the vaccine prior to travelling and by exercising caution and avoiding consuming contaminated food and water.
