Hepatitis B - cases and deaths increase in Pathanamthitta villages, Kerala State, India (update)

Health officials have reported more cases of hepatitis B in Pathanamthitta villages (Pramadom, Mallasserry, Thengumkavu and surrounding villages). A total of 39 cases have been confirmed by two different laboratory tests. Tha actual number of cases may be much higher. At least 2 people have died from this infection.

Travellers should be aware that hepatitis B is preventable through vaccination. When there is a risk of exposure to hepatitis B virus, travellers can reduce this risk by exercising caution and avoiding contact with body fluids, unscreened blood transfusions and unsterilized needles and syringes.
